Assuming that we are talking about theatrical LDs, they need to follow
the whole process throuigh from square one. The first production
conference to the get-out. They also need to sit in with the LD in
private meetings when the LD thinks out the design.
All of this places an extra burden on the LD. Rather than doing much
of the work in their head, they have to explain what they propose, and
why. This may be a good thing. I know that most of my rigs were
tending to be the same, always subject to the set design and stage
form. I know that they work, but fresh ideas might, just might, work
better.
I follow McCandless quite closely, in principle. There is a danger
that my shadow may follow me too closely, in his or her future, and I
should not wish to be the creator af a school of lighting design. I
know my limitations.
