[SML] Anyone have experience of doing a play in black and white?

Hi, I'm new here and new to my position as costume designer for our local
dramatics group. Our director is very keen to have the flashback scenes
appear to be in black and white. I naively thought my job would be
relatively simple, just have all those costumes in black or white with
shades of grey in between. But, as so often is the case, it appears that I
am wrong. Does anyone know if we can achieve this and how do we go about
it? Any guidance gratefully received!
