Something else to remember from my school days, "hot glass looks like
cold glass".  Also, since glass doesn't radiate as much, you don't feel
the heat coming off it like you would hot metal.

My soldering irons have stainless steel tubes holding the heater and
pointy bit out there.  Since stainless is a poor conductor of heat
(compared to plain steel), you can touch the part near the handle and
not know the other end is smoking hot.
