Step one is to selectively record the subs.

If you don't inlude intensity in your record filter, you'll just set the 
color but the light won't be on.

Step 2 (and this is the one that tripped me up) is to make sure that 
*nothing* else is controlling the light. In my case, the fixture profile 
had my cyc lights homing to white.  So when I'd bring up the red 
submaster, the blue, green and amber were already at full from the 
fixture profile.
