I've been dancing lately at a studio that built its own dance floor
with a design I hadn't heard of. They used three layers of two by
fours, which were laid down in the "basketweave" way, with the wider
side parallel to the floor. These layers were spaced by four feet,
which is a lot. Then on top they had a single layer of 1' and 1/8"
tongue and groove plywood. The long side of the plywood lay on a two
by four. The result is a floor that is a little more firm than ideal
in a ballet floor, but I believe it achieves the main purpose of a
dance floor, which is to reduce injuries. It has lasted something like
twenty years. They brought in a profesional to weld the marley, and
that marley is going strong for twenty years. The builder of the
floor told me that he thought the secret the success of their marley
is that the room keeps a stable temperature day and night, with no
direct sunlight.

ps Has anyone used O'Mara portable dance floor?
