+1 on the idea to use poly cyc.

It depends on what the front surface should look like, but lightweight
muslin is also capable of serving as a rear projection surface (unpainted,
though dyed might work).

Finally, if its offcuts you¹re looking for, SSSL [Syracuse Scenery and
Stage Lighting] also offered small pieces/offcuts at reasonable rates.
They¹ve always been good for us to work with.
