The bottom batten does not have to be a pipe in the pipe sleeve. You can
use a wooden sandwich batten. Two 1x4 battens that sandwich the bottom of
the drop. If you rabbet a slot down the middle of each batten you can trap
a rope in the bottom of the pipe sleeve in the rabbet and that will ensure
that the batten does not slip out. You can then attach the wooden batten
to your trip batten by drilling through the bottom half of the batten that
is clear of the drop. Ideally when the drop is in the wood batten will lie
flat on the floor.

Round the edges of the batten over so it does not cut into the drop.
