[SML] compass chart

I have a compass here that's a bit fancier than my old Boy Scout one. 
On the back is a chart that has 4 columns, the titles are

0-360 angle, 0-6400 angle,  % gradient, Distance

7, 125, 12, 1/8

I don't remember anything like this chart (of course in my Boy Scout
days we hadn't discovered America yet).  Anyone know how to use the chart?
