Yes to all that... I don't much like the current Masonite stand-in materials. I do, however, like Plyron. A lot.
It's available in a few thicknesses. And it's hard to hurt it.
That's my tuppence.

When laying new flooring material, it is best to paint BOTH sides. True or False?
Andrew: If temporary, short run, not much fluctuation in temp/humidity, it essentially doesn't matter. . .slap em down, use ring-shank nails where it WILL bubble up. If you have the time and inclination for a hassle-less flooring, then yes, paint both sides (AND EDGES) and install with a gap. We lay strips of a waxed paper under the seams as we use our tempered hardboard as a paintable show deck to prevent paint from affecting our lovely stained pine floor. Diligence in the steps of: Acclimatizing your panels and paint to the install area, even coating and sufficient drying of the paint, and even gaps make for WAAAY less maintenance.
