[SML] A question about visual interpretation of RGB colors

Hi all -

In my spare time I've been designing a DMX controlled 'big pixel' to use
on the front of our building as part of a mini-renovation.

The plan was to put up a row of them along the eave line and maybe a
couple of other places and do some fun stuff with animating them
(solids, chases, etc) as part of the exterior decor.

I've got the electronics working fine but getting white, red, green and
blue LEDs to make a visual approximation of cleanly mixed color seem
problematic. I am using multiples of each color of LED to get the
brightness I want but the individual LEDs are easily discerned rather
than a 'blend' of color. A translucent cap might help but would
certainly diminish the already dimmish output.

I did one spin of the circuit board with the LEDs of each color sort of
interleaved or scattered ( YRGB GBYR, etc) and viewing it the individual
LEDs are very apparent. They're currently arranged into about a
1.25x1.25" array.

I'm going to experiment with another configuration and cluster each
color a bit closer together and grouped together and see how that works
out -

but I'm wondering if there's any 'collective wisdom' about this sort of
thing.

It's also possible that once I get far enough away from the LED array
the color will blend/mix better but that's an experiment for another day.

Thanks in advance and Good Night

Carla
