DMX is open loop.  It just keeps broadcasting a value, and doesn't
listen.  Think about talking to a flyman and just saying "out"
repeatedly and not listening that it's hit the arbor stop or the piece
is falling or whatever can go wrong.  Most rigging control is closed
loop, and can hear the flyman responding and constantly checking a
bunch of real time contacts and data, and is built to be reliable for
human safety.  If a dimmer get too dim or too bright, not likely a
threat to people (disregarding what a director or ld might do to an me
later.)
