Haven't really done Arduino programming other than tweaking the stuff
that passes for a program on one of my 3D printers, but DMX shouldn't
take up that much processing power. I did a semi-smart light using one
of the cheapest TI MSP430 processors that reads DMX and controls two
stepping motors (intensity and color, no gobos). It's also remotely
programmable.
I also di the same on our DMX dimmers, up to 800 DMX updates per second
with 4 channels of 8/16 bit PWM dimming out.
Now that I'm using the ARM Cortex processors, DMX is super simple.
