[SML] PVC socket cap

What are the odds that I can drill & tap 2" white PVC socket caps to put a 1/4" MPT fitting in and have them reliably hold city water pressure? 
Isn't the part you want a reducer instead of a cap? Seems like there fittings of this sort available for adding a guage to a water pumping system. 
But maybe that doesn't give you the room you need for the other components.
