[SML] NYC knife law

"Gravity" knifes are illegal, not pocket knives per se. Basically if it can
be flicked open with one hand, they considered it illegal. And the NYPD is
very good at flicking them open, even if you can't. There was talk last
summer of a bill to address that problem, but I'm not sure where it ended
up. It depends on the cop who stops you. If they see a knife hanging off
your belt, or even if they just see the clip on your pants pocket they may
stop you. They might tell you to keep it out of sight, or if they need an
arrest for their quotas or to bump up their record they might arrest you.

I don't carry a knife in NYC.

because they use them at work and it's considered a tool so Local ONE has
worked with the cops to convince them that it's OK, but if you talk with the
folks working out there, they say it's gotta stay in your pocket else it's
considered a weapon by the cops.

Well that is interesting. I have a Nite Ize pouch on my hip at all times
with a Leatherman, Flashlight, silver and black Sharpies, and a ball point
pen. Would I be in violation if I wore that in NYC? Just curious how
would one find out about this law and anything similar if just visiting a
city.
