[SML] Building a stage

There's a pretty good book called "Theatre Buildings: A Design Guide"
which has some useful information for thinking about how to layout and
plan for a building. Good case studies on different sized spaces and
how they approached it. You may be able to borrow some of their
layouts for determining lobby space, backstage support, etc.

There is also Theatre Builders by James Steele. Less useful, perhaps,
but still a good resource. I'm seeing used copies on Amazon for about
8 bucks, so why not? If you find one good piece of advice in there,
it will pay itself over. He follows a couple of very large projects
getting built and the thought process behind them.

Like others have responded before, it's hard to know where to start to
provide advice. Getting a good theatrical consultant is important- it
can save you money, time and effort in the long run. Barring that,
getting as many different theatre people you know with a range of
experiences in different spaces will be helpful in avoiding pitfalls.

There's been a couple of good discussions at Controlbooth.com
regarding new spaces and converting spaces, it's worth plumbing
through some of their archives.

Good luck!
-Tim
