We also have a Gala, about 20+ years old now. About a mile from the Indian
River, so the water table is anywhere from 4-10' down on average it seems.
Our pit floor is definitely below that. As Andrew noted, the spiral jacks
sit on the bottom, no penetration through the slab like with the
hydraulics. Our pit does have a sump pump installed that I presume is
connected with our building's roof drainage to the main sewer lines. I've
personally never witnessed it running, but know that it works.
We're not too far from you all and there are six of these in operation in
our county. I'd be happy to give you the dime and half tour if you wanted
to arrange a trip up. It really is a pretty remarkable piece of
engineering.
