They're not, to my knowledge; they're just switching a hot wire around.
Christie does use a 4-pin XLR, which grounds the pickle, but the other
three pins perform the same hot-switching functions.

I don't have my specs for the TourRig hoists that Christie uses at the
moment, so I can't say whether they use 120vac for control or not... It's
on my laptop and I'm currently not.
