[SML] Solenoids

I have always wondered about using solenoids myself. If the pin is supported through a linear bearing system, then the side load does not affect the actuator. They never give ratings for directly side-loading a solenoid.

A related component is an automotive Door Lock Actuator. It does not use a solenoid, but rather a rack-and-pinion system with a motor. They can actuate either direction, and allows you to manually move it.

There is one for under $6 at www.surpluscenter.com But, the call it a solenoid, even though it is not a solenoid.

Also, many places seem to use the term "solenoid" to refer to electrical relays.
