"The director wants "harsh" lighting "

Make sure you know what your director actually means by harsh. It's a word
I've heard used a lot, and could mean anything from blazing factory lights
to film noir. I've had directors say they want a fluorescent kind of look,
and then they become dismayed by the general, undramatic shadowless effect
it gives. Harsh lighting might mean bright white cold light, or it could
mean your murky look with a general foggy feeling, or it could mean sharp
shadows, maybe on the walls if you have no wings, maybe from one side
only. If you can find some photo to show the director in advance that could
help.
good luck!
