Bouncing the light off the surface of the lecturn softens the light really nicely and eliminates the issue of lights shining into the eyes of the speaker.

Covering the surface of the lecturn with a light grey or off white piece of cardstock makes it better in a number of ways. It gives the light a larger bounce area so better light on th speaker. Also provides a not as slippery surface to keep scripts and so on from sliding off. And it's a easily renewable surface to replace when someone spills or writes on it.

Maybe include a place for remote controls for things like vcr or PowerPoint. Cupholders, one for a drink and one for the laser pointer and writing sticks.

For major fancy, adjustable height top and a pull out step at the bottom.

Hi all,
I’ve found that single LEDs (as they are point sources) tend to annoy speakers, especially if they are not used to having lights shined in their eyes. However, Joe’s suggestion of using the Podium as a bounce can be very effective. If the surface is not shiny, the glare will not bother the speaker, but you can often get enough light onto it to “fill in the creases”.

Dear Joe,
Sometimes a single LED light source pointed at the speaker's face and taped to the top of the microphone in the goose-neck mike stand already in use, is sufficient.

At a creationist group that I am part of, we often have speakers talking next to a video projection. In the meeting room we have available, we have a choice between too much light, which washes out the screen, or all the lights off.

To fix this, I recently purchased a rechargeable LED desk lamp that can clamp to the podium. The idea is to aim it towards the speaker's face, or perhaps simply down at his notes, so that the light bouncing off of it will illuminate his face. We often create a video of the presentation, so we need at least some supplemental light, even if the audience can see enough from the light bouncing off the screen.

I didn't want to totally blind the speaker. So, I chose a light that was dimmable.
