[SML] Tracking Scenery

I've had zero experience with automated scenery, but I thought it might be
a fun project.  I've seen that modern computer-controlled systems sell for
tens of thousands of dollars, but I'm sure there must be an old-school
method I could try without going broke - can anyone point me towards a
how-to resource?
