[SML] 14" fluorescent tubes?

Are they fluorescent or incandescent? It could be a Lumiline type lamp http://www.buylightfixtures.com/ge-lumiline-light-bulbs.aspx

My old HS board had these inside to backlight the faders.

With a little work you could put in some incandescent ropelight.
