For that purpose I've used usb powered gooseneck lights paired with one of those little usb rechargabe batteries.  I do suggest something to keep it from sliding on the table too easily.  I just put a couple wraps of friction tape around the battery.

Subject: [SML] Red LED clip-on book light? No such thing? Really?

Does anyone know of a RED LED clip-on ("book") light?  OnStage makes a
dual-head gooseneck for music stands, but I am looking for the basic
1-head, battery-powered clip-on style, for reading/writing notes in
the dark of tech. I've been googling everywhere, and I can't believe
someone hasn't made such a thing....

Found one company that makes a unit for using with your telescope at
night... right idea, but not really the same thing....

Anyone? Anyone?
