If an item is popular and sells the computing power will come. 
Specialized machines to "mine" bitcoins are now amazingly powerful and
last I heard they make up 50% of the computing power of the planet.  I
can see the same thing for graphics, as it is video games have driven
the development of quite powerful and low(ish) cost video chips.
