I would also suggest laying down a sacrificial 1/4" Masonite (or current
equivalent) directly onto of the hardwood on the area you intend to paint.
That is likely to hold paint more readily and can be gone over with recoats
many times before needing to replace it.  The cost and labor of refinishing
the painted oak surface would be a nuisance, I feel.  The contrast of
bounced light from the poly floor compared to the painted surface will be
annoying.  Were it I, I would deck the entire surface and paint the whole
floor from apron edge to the back wall.  Others here can recommend an
appropriate paint for you.
