Greg et al.
I’ve been pretty quiet for a while now. Not for any reason other than I didn’t have anything to add to the discussions at hand. But, as one of the old guys on this list I wanted you to know that I’m still here lurking in the shadows and thoroughly enjoying the conversations. Greg, I’m particularly glad you’re sticking with it. It is sometimes hard to remember how much enjoyment and satisfaction we get out of this business, especially when the long hours turn into long days & weeks. I remember when you first joined the list. Lots of observations, questions and comments. You’ve been working with the kids at the high school for many years now and they’ve greatly benefited from your dedication and experience. It’s been fun to watch that happen.
The industry is changing, as all things do. But the one constant through all that change, and the thing that makes the vagaries of this business worthwhile, is that we are a community. And, as a community, we care about and take care of each other. As Greg says, we have each other’s backs. And these days that a very special thing.
Peace.
Bill S.

Subject: Re: [SML] <Re: <hello>
Two weeks out from opening our production of A.L. Weber’s Phantom. Pretty ambitious for a non magnet high school but our performers have the chops for it. Most dedicated crew I have ever had. Usually by this time of year I drop from 40 crew members to about 15 doing all the work for the show. This year I went from about 25 in September to 35 with possibly more coming out the week of the show. They are pretty green but they have to start somewhere. At this rate I might get to assign everyone ONE dedicated scene shift for the show to spread the jobs out.
I turn 50 this Spring and am trying to figure out if I can keep this up for another 15 or if it is time to start looking elsewhere. I guess in three weeks it will smooth out again and I wait for the May/June craziness and reconsider my career choice yet again.
Seriously I wouldn’t want to do it without the Stagecraft List having my back. I appreciate ALL of you out there, regulars and lurkers. YOU are what make this such a great industry.
