One of the sights that struck me as funny, when I first moved to Lancaster in 2000, was the site of a horse and buggy pulling up to a gas pump. Apparently I had misunderstood how horses are powered.
Actually, they Amish have gas engines at home, that run a generator, water pump, and perhaps a pneumatic pump. Their goal is to be off-grid, not to avoid electricity.
But, charging batteries can take a long time, so generally batteries are charged using solar electric power.
One of the ironies of enerergy efficient appliences, are the newer washing machines. They take 45 minutes for a load, vs about 15 minutes for my old one. For the Amish, that means they need to run their inefficient generator for 3x the amount of a time as an older washing machine.
