Variable speed motor geared down to a winch take up drum. Experiment with motor speed to get desired time and sync with the moving light movements. Power to motor drive via dmx relay to sync to mover.
That being said, a good man on the rope is probably lots less expensive.

Greeting from the lurking section. Because I have curtain track, this came to me. I have a client working on a feature film here in NYC.
The idea is to have the actor sit in their room and simulate time passage by tracking a 100# light 20-30 feet outside the window.
First, they have a moving light that will pan to always hit the window.
Now for the problem, smoothly traveling 20-30’ over a controlled variable 4-5 minutes.
DMX control would be way cool.
Any thoughts. They are talking a grip with a rope without a better plan.
