With due respect to the director (it’s nice that someone’s thinking and trying to foresee problems), but this one just ain’t gonna be a big deal.  
Once I did the show a stage where there was 50’ of upstage space, with black curtains, and a black scrim up there.  And everyone heard the Act II “onstage" dialogue just fine.  

If anyone’s unconvinced, the director could block everyone that’s up there in profile or something like that.  It might even look better that way for the audience who can see through the breakaway window and the doors when they’re open, which has got to be a hundred times.
