Something you could try it to take a heating element out of electric BBQ
& use that to etch the words you want.

I WANT to make clear that I have done this but I believe some painter
may have done this at the summer stock I worked at 20 some years ago.  I
also hope that you understand that if you use this method you need great
ventilation & wear a mask.

Better is a small soldering iron. You don't have to touch the foam, only get
the tip close. There are not many fumes generated, but I would still want good
ventilation.
