[SML] Dissolving foam

 First, thanks for the tips and ideas.
I work in the refrigeration industry, where both polystyrene and polyurethane are used. The benefit to polyurethane is that it is much less flammable,  it has toxic fumes when burned. The polystyrene is much less toxic when burned, but is much more flammable.
The goal of using a hot wire or soldiering iron on the polystyrene, is not to burn it. Rather, to simply melt it, which does not release any toxins.  Still, it is best to have good ventilation.

I WANT to make clear that I have done this but I believe some painter
may have done this at the summer stock I worked at 20 some years ago.  I
also hope that you understand that if you use this method you need great
ventilation & wear a mask.

Better is a small soldering iron. You don't have to touch the foam, only get
the tip close. There are not many fumes generated, but I would still want good
ventilation.
