Yes, that’s an alarming trend in high school theatres.  Makes for a dangerous condition under any circumstances.

In the scenario previously described, I would have opted to bring both pipes in and snub the lines off with….wait for it…a snub knot.  If the anticipated loads are under 400 pounds the snub knot will do fine.  It provides the operator complete control of the load at all times.
