Wenger had portable shells available as of the mid 1970s. I put one together in 1977.

First shell I designed and specified was in 1982.  All more or less
custom - from Wenger.  Standardized didn't seem to be too popular till
nearer 1990.

(I wonder if its still there - Lander College in Greenwood SC?)
