[SML] job ethics

In my undergrad years I went to a marketing conference in Chicago where we met with some of the big names in the business. One of the men talked about integrity and ethics to show why it's good to picking jobs that you personally can stand behind. He was offered the account for the birth control pill roll out in the early 1960s and felt that as a Catholic, it wasn't a good fit for him, so he turned it down. The contract had some kind of bonus attached to it based on the sales figures and even with husband permission required, as you can imagine, the sales numbers for the pill were very high. He lost over a million dollars with that decision but his conscience was more important to him than the money.
I wish we had more of that.
I've been on both sides - suffering through an abusive workplace because I desperately needed the money, and being able to turn it down because I know I'm not a good fit for some reason. Lately that's been to recommend POC for theater gigs that can benefit from the things they'd bring to the room more than what I could.
One thing I like about being in the union is we've got each other's backs. If I turn it down, someone else who's a better fit can take it and we're all happier.
Now... if you want to send your holy-roller show to Green Bay and not allow any women on the call... you won't be so lucky. But smart producers will let the advance folks know if there is anything that might cause concern so the staffing can be done with that in mine.
I won't fault someone for making a decision in line with their ethics as long as they are consistent in that application. Hypocrites leave themselves open to ridicule.
