Like other forms of communication, you have to look at the context and can't just assume the meaning is ___ without asking to confirm. 

 

Precisely.

 

In this case there is a LOT of assuming going on – in SOME cases, based on set notions of who the group behind the event is.

 

Having never seen the symbol before (that I remember), I saw the design and thought “an interesting layout using stock deck sizes” and “that’d let me wrap my audience around the stage.”  I then started thinking of what the lighting rig would look like.

 

W/o knowing the decision-making hierarchy, I’m not at-all surprised that no-one caught the possible reference ahead-of-time.  Even if someone in the chain-of-command could have had the knowledge to see the issue, he/she might have only seen a perspective rendering.  Who knows…?
