[SML] Big book spines

I suggest going with rigid insulation foam. It will be quick work to curve the spines.  You can probably do the spine's curve along the edges before you cut the individual books.
The other part to add are some raised embossed parts. Perhaps just gluing some yarn or twine where those raised lines. They will later be covered with whatever you cover the books with.
I wonder if the covering can be paper. Then you can print titles on the spine with a laser printer (because of water resistance) and then glue over books. There is even gold color toner if you go to a print shop.  Also you can probably include some sort of leather texture in the background.
To me the draw back to the paper idea, is that the pages of the book should be recessed away from the cover.  It may be viable to laminate your prints onto some poster board to give it more stiffness.  I think both the print and the poster board should be well soaked in warm water to make it as pliable as possible.  My main concern is that the paper may tend to split as you bend the cover over the body of the book. So perhaps adding the paper print should be done after the poster board is glued to the body.
The paper part is a texture added to the foam. I have done one book by dragging a hot soldering iron along the paper part.
I am a little concerned that the few choices for thicknessed of the foam may not look right.  So try to add at least a few books with odd thicknesses.
