Sorry to say, you pretty much have it right.

The SQ series is a great line of budget / small format mixers but it’s
missing a few things, and one of those things is a dedicated center / mono
buss.

So yeah, if you have an LCR PA, this might not be the best mixer for you.
You’ll be missing that dedicated output buss, and there’s no implementation
of LCR panning.

As you said, you can burn a mix buss and use that for your center channel,
but that’s pretty much your only option.  Make it a group send and
customize your fader layers so that the master is always on the last fader
on each layer, and you’ll be as close to having a center output as you can
get.
