As a liberal arts school grad myself, I agree with you in principle and
philosophy. That said, at least where I am in the world "college is only
for career training" is absolutely the prevailing thinking among those who
set the policy and approve the funding.
There's a lot of "college is a business, our product is our students, and
their future employment is the sole measure of our success" language in the
halls of the politicians (and in our own administration) in my state. And
though it's a lot more prevalent at my (two year) institutional level, that
kind of thinking is also prevalent at the university level as well.
It's sad, but true.
Of course, Florida is not exactly the bastion of solid educational
administration at the moment, but I don't think that thinking is reserved
for my home state either.
