For a spring return on an air cylinder, the air that is released to permit the cylinder to retract is normally slow enough that it doesn't thwomp. Just the air hose and control valve restrictions are enough to prevent it. And if desired, it could be slowed down further with a needle valve. Similarly, how fast it extends can be controlled as well, and this is a common thing to do.
