It is always a good idea to have a filter inline but in most applications, if you are filling you tank with filtered air, you should be fine. I never used a filter on my pneumatic caster setups in 20 years and never had an issue. Now that I am thinking about it, half of my fill lines didn’t have a filter inline and still had no issues. I am sure it wears the o-rings and cylinders but for the amount that these were used I got lucky I guess.
