(Sorry, Tim. For some reason, the SML server seems to have left off the
usual "reply to" address from your last message, so when I clicked
"Reply" it only went to your address. I'll try re-sending it to the list
here.)

Tim, that's interesting. I have heard of some frequencies "masking"
other frequencies, particularly at various relative volume levels to
each other. I believe the phenomenon is integrated into the MP3 data
compression algorithm. It was discovered that some aspects of an audio
signal could be thrown away because they're not perceptible underneath
other aspects of the signal.

Looking at the circumstances you describe with a different focus,
there's another possibility that might be worth considering: You might
have the high frequency tone in your ears constantly but at a barely
perceptible level, similar to a very light Tinnitus. However, you might
only notice it while you're in an indoor space that's quiet and relaxing
enough for it to not be masked by ambient environmental noise or the
mental focus of work and activities.

The low frequencies of the indoor space might be coincidence, as they're
also located in the indoor space, and you're concentrating on careful
listening at that point.

I'll say this much: Sound can be a wacky combination of art, science,
objective and subjective experiences. Even as a professional audio
engineer, I know how often I can psych myself into hearing things. :)
I'll plead the 5th on the number of times that I've carefully adjusted
an EQ to my satisfaction, only to later realize that it was bypassed the
whole time.
