[SML] Upgrading audio mixer

I seem to keep on saying this, but make sure you are sure what you
want your sound system for. If it is for amplified sound or PA work,
there is a lot of gear around that will do that.

I come from a different tradition, and specialise in creating
atmospheres, backgrounds, and spot effects to enhance straight plays,
in a Tyrone Guthrie style theatre. What you need for this is not a
mixer, but a versatile and controllable routing system, and these are
not easy to find. I think the most difficult show I have ever had to
do this for is Ariel Dorfman's "Death and the Maiden". If anyone has
ever had to deal with this, I should like to compare notes.

Without going into too much detail, I needed one pseudo-quadraphonic
source, four stereo sources, and two spot sources. There were a total
of fourteen loudspeakers deployed, to get the right pictures.
Fortunately, our sound system was designed for this sort of thing,
although I had to supplement it with an extra power amplifier and
controller.

It is a whole different ball game from miking up a show.
