is there a baseboard which mihght be nailed into studs thus revealing stud
locations
[or less likely, ceiling moulding } ?

have you tried pounding on the wall (maybe rubber mallet)
to see if you can detect a difference in how solid it sounds/feels...
usually works quite well with drywall, *might* work
with the wood *if* you get along a furring strip...
only place it will be real solid is where the furring strip intersects the
stud
