Egg-zactly. We have a large Mormon population in our school district
(and most are quite the Arts supporters in general) - and they've
always been pretty good at just self-censoring... that is to say, if
the subject matter of a play or musical is getting a little close to
their comfort level (after all, Grandma will come see this) - then
they don't audition or participate. Ain't no big deal. Interestingly,
when I directed "Pippin" many-a-year-ago, we had several Mormon kids
in it - in lead roles as well. They dealt with the piece with
maturity. (And we, of course, as their adult guides, had the trust of
their parents.)

Yet, when I directed Joe Orton's LOOT, the Mormon kids chose not to
audition (no one made a deal of it, either).... although one Mormon
boy, a fine musician, composed some original music for the show. :)
No one made a stink - they just didn't participate. (Though many came
to see their colleagues in the performances.)
