[SML] painting both sides of flooring

Hi everyone.

(repeat #596 of conversation)

When laying new flooring material, it is best to paint BOTH sides. True or False?

We're looking at (what appears to be) a tempered hardboard, hardened one side only.
Looks a lot like Masonite, with a fibrous felt-y look and feeling to the underside. It comes from Brazil, and Stratford uses it on their stages.

And, Gap or no Gap?
My boss tried to gap a Plywood dance floor a few years ago (using finishing nails as the gap), but the manufacturing imperfections of the material made that impossible as the flooring when along. Gaps were not consistent.

Thanks.
