Probably not applicable for in-the-round,
with no back surface to project upon,

but a few years back we did this
with a S4 (-26' ?) on a spotlight gimbal-and-handle rig,
with a gobo with a very small cluster of pinholes.

Worked surprisingly well.

Zero budget (gobo from aluminum roof flashing,
homegrown "gimbal"
(ie, yoke with secured loose-enough-to-pivot fasteners)
and homemade handle.
