[SML] NYC Stagehand shot by police

He was a member of Local ONE, but not employed by Book of Mormon and had not been to work that morning, as erroneously reported elsewhere. He was a troubled soul who had been a victim of assault/batter which included a baseball bat to the head. If anything, this should serve as a wakeup call for us to help each other out rather than picking on each other. Substance abuse is a big problem in our industry.

Also, it's illegal to carry a pocket knife in NYC. Stagehands get a "pass" because they use them at work and it's considered a tool so Local ONE has worked with the cops to convince them that it's OK, but if you talk with the folks working out there, they say it's gotta stay in your pocket else it's considered a weapon by the cops.

Thanks for bringing it up, Kate.

I'm a lurker, and I'm not really sure how to start this conversation, but it's something we should talk about.

He was trying to buy beer at 8:30 in the morning. He was belligerent, police were called, and he pulled out a knife that looks like the one most of us carry every day.

The Post and Daily News have more gritty details about his life, but they don't deserve the ad revenue.
