I joined a local maker group (Make717) for $35/month. That gave me access to both the 3D printers and some fairly high-end software. They even had a deal with SolidWorks to let members have access to the student version to install on their home computers. For the 3D printing, the biggest benefit is that we have people around to ask questions, and help trouble-shoot when things don't print well.
They have also offered to allow people to earn their monthly fee by manning the facility as "Maker in Charge". Though, they really only want people they have known for a while to do that.
