[SML] Smoke, heat, fire sensors for HVAC systems

Oops! I somehow sent the reply before I had finished composing it.
The theatre also had ionization detectors in the fly tower - which were also sensitive to theatrical smoke. The theatre was
finally able to convince the fire marshal to allow changing the detectors to rate-of-rise sensing. No more false triggers
from the fly loft.
A theatre I once worked in had an ionization detector in the return air duct. Theatrical smoke would sometimes trigger
the alarm, so we had to disable the detector and hire an off-duty fireman to stand watch.

I was peripherally involved with getting such a system working many
years ago. It involved getting a fire engineer study of the building
and alarm systems. The eventual outcome was that the sensors in the air
ducts and auditorium were able to be selectively disabled, and we had to
hire a fireman on detail duty to be on site whenever they were disabled.
One kind of smoke detector is beams of light up near the ceiling shining
across the room to a detector on the opposite wall. They detect balloons
just fine. surprise!
